Effect Methods for Gathering Customer Feedback

Voice Communication

All businesses need customer feedback in order to function successfully. Unfortunately, many businesses only get to hear about the negative feedback from customers when something goes wrong, and whilst this is important, it is also important to know when things are going right and which products or services are hitting all the right buttons with your customers. If you know what’s going wrong then you have a fighting chance to fix it, and if you know where your business strengths are you may be able to use that to your advantage also. An extremely effective way of gathering this information is by gathering customer satisfaction surveys.

By utilizing a customer satisfaction survey which is voice-based, you can actually persuade more customers to participate in the survey, which in turn means results which are more accurate and useful. Many people do not really like writing, and therefore they may not take the time to fill out a paper survey, but talking on the phone is so commonplace these days that most people feel completely comfortable and assume that it will take less time than ticking the boxes on a sheet of paper.

Once you have found a hard earned customer, it is vital for your business that you retain them for the future, and by analysing the data in your customer satisfaction surveys you will know exactly which changes you need to make to improve the satisfaction of your existing customers. By increasing customer satisfaction by a very small amount, you can dramatically increase the profits of your company. By utilizing a voice-based customer satisfaction survey, you will have much of the vital information necessary which will allow you to make any changes necessary for the continued growth of your business.

It is important for your business to take advantage of the vast improvements in technology, and thus increase its productivity and efficiency. By using an automated voice-based customer satisfaction survey, it will be available for your customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Just imagine the cost of employing someone to sit at the telephone for that amount of time. This is just one way to illustrate the cost effectiveness of this type of system. Many people will also be more honest when dealing with an automated system, rather than speaking with an actual person. It is this honest feedback which is invaluable to the growth of your company.

The recordings of these surveys also help to capture the real feelings of the customer, which can be analysed later. An open-ended question will allow you to hear the strength of feeling of their particular opinion, and you can also learn a lot from the tone of their voice or from their choice of words. A voice-based customer satisfaction survey is definitely an effective tool in gathering honest customer feedback and using it to increase the profitability of your business. The data is available in an easy to read report form, which can be invaluable when deciding the future of your products and the effectiveness of your service areas.

Pennsylvania State

Pennsylvania Pennsylvania was the second state to ratify the Constitution. The state has a long and rich history of support for independence and religious toleration.

Before European settlers moved to the area, Native Americans lived there. Among the tribes were the Delaware and the Susquehannock (whom Englishman John Smith visited in 1608).

From the early 1600s, the Pennsylvania territory was disputed territory. People from Holland, Sweden, and England all claimed titles to land in what we now call Pennsylvania. The Swedes were the first European power to make a permanent settlement in present-day Pennsylvania. In 1643 Governor Johan Printz of New Sweden established his capital at Tinicum Island within the present limits of Pennsylvania. The Dutch had trading posts in the area, and fighting broke out between Holland and Sweden eventually. England was also , and England won in 1664, capturing New York and Pennsylvania both.

It wasn’t until 1681 that Pennsylvania got its name. England’s King Charles II gave William Penn, a Quaker, the right to settle there, and named the area Pennsylvania in honor of William Penn’s father, Admiral Sir William Penn. (Yes, William Penn is the son of Sir William Penn.)

Penn was a member of the Society of Friends, or Quakers. Many people in England didn’t like the Quakers and wanted them to leave (much like the Pilgrims had to leave a few years earlier). He brought many Quakers with him to the new territory of Pennsylvania, and they lived in religious freedom there.

Penn began buying land from the Native Americans who lived to the west, and the current borders began to take shape. Settlers from Germany and France also came to Pennsylvania. In fact, France claimed the western part of what is today the state of Pennsylvania. Many Dutch and Swedes still lived there, too. And despite the Quakers’ opposition to slavery, African-American slaves were brought into Pennsylvania to work for non-Quakers.

With French claims in the west and English claims in the east, it was probably inevitable that the two cultures would clash. They took up arms against each other in the French and Indian War. The western territory saw most of the fighting. Pittsburgh, especially, was a hotbed of activity. Pittsburgh today was Fort Duquesne back then, and English General Edward Braddock lost his life in an attack on the fort. (A young George Washington accompanied Braddock on this expedition.) The French also had forts at what is today Erie, Franklin, and Waterford.

Managing Business Travel and Expenses

Expense Management

Small businesses have a lot to manage and most small business managers are constantly looking for ways to simplify the day-to-day business tasks in order to spend more time focusing on growing their business. Automating the process of managing business travel and expenses can be a great help in this area. The simpler this process is the more likely your employees will be to use it regularly to record their expenses, and if they use the system then you will be able to track the finances of your company with ease. Travel expenses are one of the areas where there is a great deal of time and money to be saved.

If you have a small business you are always looking to grow it and you need an expense management system that can grow with you. If you are in the market for an expense management system, it is important to look into how much ability there is to customize the system to your company’s specific needs. This will ensure the continued use of the system even as the business takes on more employees, clients, and expenses.

Online systems that require no hardware or software installations avoid all the hassle that usually comes with company wide software installations. These installations can often mean that employees are unable to work at their workstations for a few hours at the least, or maybe a day or so at the most. This kind of downtime is more than most companies can afford, so it is wise to look into an online system that will require no downtime to integrate it into use. These systems usually produce a return on investment much more rapidly then other kinds of expense reporting systems and if you are looking out for your company’s bottom line, this is definitely the kind of return on investment that you want.

Streamlining the process of switching to an automated expense management system is the goal of all companies that offer those services. It is good to look into the implementation track record of any company before you decide to choose their services. Remember you always want the transition to be as smooth as possible and previous cases of the software being implemented can help you to determine if this will be the case.

The costs savings, for many companies, is the biggest benefit of switching to an automated expense reporting and management system. If you choose wisely then your company will be able to experience this particular benefit as well. By combining the process of making travel arrangements with the process of filing expense reports and receiving reimbursements, the streamlined process results in time savings that translate to costs savings. Whether a small business or a larger business, you can successfully manage travel and business expenses through an automated expense reporting and management system. Be sure to do careful research to make sure that you choose the right one. Doing so will help you to save your company time and money in the long run.

Road trips with your pup

Pup on Road Trip

As a responsible pet owner, it is your duty to keep your dog safe and sound for his or her entire life. Just as you would take the safety of your children very seriously, you should also take the safety of your dog seriously.

First and foremost, it is absolutely necessary to keep your dog’s collar firmly attached with an ID tag containing a current phone number for you and for your vet. If your dog is found and you cannot be contacted, oftentimes the person who found the dog will call the vet. It is also important to consider a microchip ID that is placed under the skin of your dog between its shoulder blades. Many city animal shelters and vet offices have readers for these microchips and can locate information on your dog, you or your emergency contact if the dog is found.

Secondly, it is important to train your dog to respond to simple commands such as “come” and “stay” and most importantly – their name! Nothing is more frustrating than to search for you dog, only to find him and not be able to get him to come to you!

Many people like to take road trips with their dog. For some people, it is a matter of not having anyone to keep the dog while they travel to visit relatives or go on vacation. If you plan to travel any time or distance with your dog in the car there are important safety tips to keep in mind.

While in the car, it is important to keep your dog out of your lap while you are driving. It can be extremely dangerous because it obscures your vision and makes the steering wheel difficult to turn. Keeping the dog out of your lap can be done with some simple training techniques, but these are not always the best way. There are seatbelts made for dogs that will help keep them fastened into a secure spot in the car while you are traveling. The downfall is that these will prevent a dog from seeing out of the window while you drive because it restricts movement. This can make some dogs nervous and car sick. A more effective way is to purchase a vehicle divider device that keeps the dog in the backseat of the car while it is moving. These dividers will also protect the dog from being flown forward through the windshield if you have to suddenly hit the brakes. In addition to safety, it also helps you prevent the dog from getting mud, dirt and sand all over the car. You can restrict them to only the back of the car or SUV if you’d like. If the pet seat belt or vehicle divider is not a good fit for you and your dog, simply travel with the dog in his/her crate. Just make sure the crate is fastened or positioned where it won’t be a hazard to you or others if you are forced to hit the brakes suddenly.

Following these tips for keeping your puppy safe will make road trips more fun for master and dog.

Apartment Living and Having a Dog

Pet in House

If you live in an apartment and are thinking of getting a dog, there are a few things you should consider before making the commitment to become a pet owner.

One of the first things to consider when deciding weather or not to have a dog while you live in an apartment is the added financial responsibility. Most apartment complexes where you rent your space will require a pet fee and deposit. A recent trend in apartment policies is to require both a pet deposit and a pet fee. The pet fee will be non-refundable and the pet deposit will be held and all or a portion of it may be returned to you if you leave your apartment in good condition. You may or may not have to pay both a fee and a deposit, so check with your management company. Be sure to read your lease agreement completely to find out if there are restrictions on breeds and what kind of fees you will be charged if you are caught with an unregistered pet living in your home. Keep in mind that you will be held financially responsible for any damage your pet does to your rented home.

Another thing that is important to figure out before you decide to bring a pet into your apartment home is how accessible your apartment is to approved outside spaces for your pet to potty. If you live in an urban area, the closest grassy area for pets may be a block or two from your apartment. If you live on the 6th floor in a building with no elevator, then you have to make it 2 blocks to the pet area, you may want to reconsider getting a puppy. Your new dog will need to be taken outside to do his or her business on a regular basis. It is a good idea to make sure the approved spaces for dogs to be walked is in a place that is convenient for you to get to. If it is inconvenient to take your dog out to use the bathroom, you will likely have a rough situation on your hands. Remember that if you have a new puppy he or she will need to be taken out extremely frequently while you are housebreaking them. Older dogs can learn to go longer between outside breaks, but when they are puppies, you must be able to take them out on a very regular basis, so it is important to make sure that you are able to get in and out in a hurry.

You will also want to make sure that you get a breed of dog that is suitable for your size of apartment and your lifestyle. If you are very athletic and active and go on regular runs in your local park, a bigger dog might be a great fit for you if you plan to take your pup with you while you exercise. If you are more of a homebody, make sure you research different breeds that do well with getting their exercise indoors and will not be restless or require long outdoor sessions to expel their extra energy.

Being a dog owner while living in an apartment is very doable as long as you make smart choices and thing things through before you adopt your new pet.

The concept of recycling is not a new one.  It was first introduced with the advent of the plastic bottle.   Recycling has been a mainstay of subsistence societies for thousands of years and was an aspect of the thrift necessary to survive in an unpredictable world ruled by scarcities.   The term “we use everything about the pig except the squeal” was a factual statement.  Nothing was wasted; everything had a use.

Three events in history changed this viewpoint and opened the door to a throwaway society ruled by a “waste it” mentality.  One was the introduction of mass production techniques by industrialists such as Henry Ford which helped remove scarcity from the equation, and made it possible for large numbers of people to own commodities manufactured in volume.  Those same concepts applied to agriculture resulted in larger, more certain agricultural yields.  The second was what could be called “The Chemical Revolution”, which has it’s origins in the early 19th century, the industrial application of which was made on a broad scale in the mid-20th century.  Thus began the Age of Synthetics. Practical applications in the chemistry of substances gave us chemical fertilizers, nylon and polyester, revolutionized medicine and eventually led to the ubiquitous plastic bottle.  The third event involved the employment of mass communication systems, newspapers, the beguiling radio and finally television.  Entertainment fueled by advertising revenues ushered in the Marketing Age and Consumerism as a social philosophy was born.  “Planned obsolescence” materialized as a means of maintaining the momentum of Consumerism.

The net result of these three events has been a wholesale re-configuration of raw materials into other things at a resource-busting rate.   Simply stated this is the cycle of a waste-motivated society such as ours.  The product, of course, is “waste”, which can be defined as substances or materials that no longer have a use.

It is not necessary to throw out the technological advances of the last century and a half to restore the true economy of this planet.  In fact those same technologies which created the problem of waste are quite capable of resolving that same problem.  The missing link is organization.

Every end product of our Throwaway Society can be recycled or put to further use.  Soils, wood, ceramics, metals, plant debris and bio-wastes have been recycled throughout human history and, in fact, make up the vast majority of recyclable materials on this planet.

Paper, glass, textiles and plastics make up a more problematic category as they have undergone non-biological reconfiguration from their original form, but again are not beyond current knowledge and technological means to recycle for further use in our society.  Recycled glass and paper are the best known applications of this sort of economy.

The most neglected and problematic to the aesthetics and health of our planet are the recovery of chemicals and of re-useable goods.  The damage done by bad husbandry of the chemical by-products of industry is well-documented throughout recent history.  Responsible chemical recovery policies at the industrial level and adequate recycling options at the consumer level answer the problem.

The environmental clutter and sheer mass of wholesale discard of re-useable goods such as household goods, clothing, intact demolition debris, building materials, computer equipment, lighting fixtures and other manufactured items begs the re-evaluation of wasteful manufacturing strategies such as planned obsolescence.

Strong resale markets that are themselves the product of depressed economic conditions extend the lifetime of existing commodities thus keeping them out of the waste stream.  The degree of workability of this depends utterly on a change in the value given thrifty economic practices such as personal stewardship of one’s belongings.

The idea that the economy of the world depends utterly on the consumption of manufactured goods is the fundamental idea that precludes wholesale endorsement of recycling technologies as a viable economic activity.  This fixed idea has done more than any other factor to make the problem of reusing and recycling the end products of our industrial world “unsolvable”.  Making recycling economically viable may result in entirely new technological applications which will extend the lifetime of this civilization. It would be a terrible thing to have to throw this civilization away because it could not conceive of the usefulness of its own end products.

Make HR Tasks Easier

When you think of your human resource department, you may not realize how many diverse tasks exist that are required from the individuals who make up this department. There are many tasks that your human resource department conducts that could be handed over to your other employees. With the help of human resource management software, your employees will be able to have more access to their personnel files, and this software will also allow them to make updates to their files with information such as new address and phone number. It will also give them access to other reports in their files letting each employee know where they stand in your organization.

This type of software will free up time for the human resource department to focus on more complicated tasks. Whether you are trying to boost employee morale, increase profits, save money, or any other goal you may have, this type of software can be a starting point to meeting your goals. It has the ability to make your human resource department much more efficient and ensure accuracy for your employee files. While there may be some concerns with security when it comes to the large amounts of sensitive information that makes up the files in your human resource department, this type of software has measures in place to solve this type of concern as well.

This type of software will allow you to set varying levels of authorization to ensure that only authorized personnel have access to this type of information. There are some products that will allow each member of your management team to enter their own reports directly into the system and this allows them access to the files of the employees under their responsibility; while your employees will only have access to their own files.
Taking all of these advantages into account, your human resource department will dramatically reduce the time they spend on information seeking tasks for your employees and this will help them focus on more complicated tasks. It will also boost the overall morale of your employees, which will increase productivity and profits. It is very rare that such a simple change can have such dramatic results, but this type of software can provide all of these benefits and more. This type of software will allow your human resource department to streamline their tasks, which will translate to huge savings in labor related expenses.

Whether you are searching for simple ways to streamline many of the tasks that are attached to your human resource department or looking for ways to cut spending, this software is the answer you have been looking for. In fact, human resource management software has the potential to be the answer to many of your organization’s issues. It is important to remember that this type of solution is only the beginning to reaching your goals; however, it is a very large step in the right direction. This type of change will allow you to keep your procedures in place while only making small visible changes.

Nashville Salutes Its Veterans

Nashville is a city full of rich history from its early beginnings. Those thinking of visiting or moving to Nashville will appreciate the cities commitment to honor our Veterans. The city, along with all other cities in the US will be celebrating Veterans Day this month and there are many ways that the city will show its appreciation.

It was President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 who proclaimed Veterans Day observation. It was originally known as Armistice Day and became a legal federal holiday in 1938. Due to President Eisenhower, it became known as Veterans Day so that, “a grateful Nation might pay appropriate homage to the Veterans of all its wars who have contributed so much to the preservation of this Nation”. At our Nations capital, the Veterans Day National Ceremony is held at Arlington National Cemetery. The color guard, made up of members from each of the military services, pays tribute to America’s war dead during a tradition-rich ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns inside the Memorial Amphitheater. The Veterans Day National Committee also selects a number of regional sites for Veterans Day observances throughout the country. From stirring parades and ceremonies to military exhibits and tributes to distinguished veterans, these events serve as models for other communities to follow in planning their own observances. Nashville is one of these regions selected as an example.

One annual event is the Nashville Veterans Day Parade. It began as a local city parade and grew to larger crowds from neighboring communities. Although there are many other events throughout the community, the Veterans Day Parade is the main event. The parade begins at 11:00 a.m. in remembrance of the timing of the treaty that ended World War 1. Lipscomb University’s alumni veterans will be marching and marks the first time in recent history that an area university has featured its veterans in the event. It’s a colorful and musical event that friends and family that will tug at your heartstrings.

In honor of our Veterans, several attractions in Nashville have extended discounts. . Some restaurant chains conducting food giveaways to veterans and active duty personnel are Applebee’s, Outback Steakhouse and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Applebee’s is offering select signature entrees for free! The Country Music Hall of Fame is giving military personnel with valid ID will $2 off general admission tickets. The Grand Ole Opry November 11 is Veterans Day, and America Supports You is celebrating the commitment and sacrifice our Veterans have shown with special shows that include performances by Darryl Worley, John Anderson, Rodney Atkins, and more. Also, Lowe’s and Home Depot Lowe’s typically have offered a 10% to veterans and active duty.

It’s important to Nashville to show it’s appreciation to the men and women who have served and are serving our country. Veterans Day is a day to come and show respect and support for those who have fought, died, been captured or are missing in action in the cause of peace and freedom.

Different Types of Engagement Rings

Different Types of Engagement Rings
Solitaire diamond rings are one of the most common styles for cheap engagement rings. Finding the perfect one often takes time and patience, much like finding the perfect partner. After all, a wedding ring is meant to be worn for the rest of your life! You probably didn’t enter into the decision of marriage lightly, so choosing the ring deserves the correct amount of consideration also. Choosing the perfect setting and the best diamond are two important decisions when picking out diamond engagement rings.

The way a diamond is mounted impacts the style of a ring greatly. Many diamond solitaire rings are mounted with prongs. The diamond will generally sit on a small “basket” and be secured by metal prongs. The more prongs that are attached to the diamond, the more secure the setting is. Prong settings are generally used for larger size diamonds. This is a common setting that is still widely used today, but some women don’t like them because they have a tendency to get caught on things. If the prongs loosen, the diamond can be lost. Prong settings require some upkeep on the part of the user and will require periodic trips to a jeweler to make sure that they are still secure.

Bezel settings and flush settings are two more options. A bezel setting means that a piece of metal is actually wrapped around and slightly over the edges of the diamond to hold it into place. It is generally very secure and has the added bonus of covering any flaws that the diamond may have. Other times a diamond can be set into a hole within the ring and secured that way. That is called a flush setting. Both of these mountings are good for any size diamonds. They are very durable and don’t get caught on things like prong settings can.

Choosing the right type of metal is very important as well. Gold used to be the most commonly used option, but now more and more people are branching out and using other precious metals. Platinum and titanium are two metals that are being used for wedding bands. They are durable, stylish and strong. Sometimes the alloys that are used in gold bands can irritate some people’s skin. Common alloys that cause allergies are silver, lead, nickel and copper. Both titanium and platinum are considered to be hypoallergenic, which means that they do not contain alloys that will cause any allergies.

Of course, choosing the right diamond is important as well. If you have a family heirloom, then you might already have a vintage engagement ring.  If you’re looking at pre-set engagement rings, then the diamond is already chosen for you and is included in the total cost of the ring. However, if you are looking at loose diamonds and designing your own ring or choosing between other types of settings and mountings, then getting the best diamond for the price is definitely worth it. Diamonds are generally graded using the four “C’s”- meaning cut, clarity, color and carat size. It is important to research all of them in order for you to understand what to look for and how diamonds are priced.

Diamond shopping can be overwhelming, but armed with the correct information it can also be fun and rewarding. Buying an engagement ring is a process and making informed choices can really add to the pleasure that such a purchase will bring!

New Sibling to the Family

New Sibling to the Family

Some women experience morning sickness. Others suffer drastic ups and downs in hormone levels. I had neither. Instead, I was the pregnant woman who worried about anything and everything for 10 whole months. There was one particular worry that ran through my brain over and over like a hamster on a treadmill: How was my seven-year-old stepson going to handle the change?

New Sibling My stepson was an only child, and while a baby brother or sister was always top on his Christmas and birthday wish lists, we weren’t really sure how he would react when his wish came true. At seven years old, an only child gets used to having the full attention of both his parents. We spent hours in the early days of my pregnancy discussing how we could help make a smooth transition and how we could involve our big boy in every aspect of welcoming baby into the family, starting with breaking the news.

When we finally decided to share the news of a new sibling, we crafted the moment and imagined his reaction. We brought him into the guest room and told him we needed his help; we wanted to paint the room but couldn’t decide on a color. He wanted orange, his favorite color du jour. We explained it depended who lived in the room. He furrowed his brow, as we scripted he would. "Who’s gonna live in our guest room?" he asked, again, as predicted. We led him through the rest of the conversation until he finally came to the right conclusion. "I’m getting a baby brother or sister!" he screamed. He screamed; I cried. It was all going so perfectly. We tried to lengthen the moment, but as with any seven year old, his attention span was minimal. After a few jumps up and down and hugs all around, he asked if he could go back to his cartoons. No, he didn’t have any questions, he said. "O.K." Why did I ever worry?

We must have made the offer to answer questions a million times during the next six months. I worried I would have to explain where babies come from, and I did. I was relieved to learn that a simple explanation of love, decisions and doctors was enough to satisfy his curiosity. Whew! Of course, I worried I would have to go into more detail when baby came. Thank goodness, I did not.

I worried right up until the moment I went into labor. Fortunately our son was in school when it happened. I always feared I would go into labor in the middle of the night, and our son would have lasting resentment at being whisked off to a relative’s home in his sleep. I worried again after the baby was born, and my husband left to surprise the new brother at school.

I took a deep breath when our boy walked through the hospital door. His face lit up, and he ran to hug me. He hovered over his baby sister. He was in awe of every aspect of her smallness. He watched sweetly as I fed and burped her, and he held her so gently, it was as if his arms had been waiting for her forever. His voice immediately changed into a singsong replica of his own, cooing and talking away. "I love you, baby sister," he said. It was at that moment, I knew I would never worry again.

Parental Discipline

Parental Discipline

Parental Discipline I highly doubt many people follow the suggestions of the experts from this show and that. These experts recommend would-be-parents set aside time before baby’s arrival to discuss how to handle discipline for the child. I think new parents have their hands full trying to make it through the first pregnancy! Despite my sarcasm, I have to agree on one point; discussing how to discipline a child must be done before the child is in need of discipline!

Parental Discipline When baby boy is nine months old and repeatedly pulling the dog’s tail, how should you react? Some parents will insist a firm voice repeating "No," along with physically removing the infant’s hand is enough to deter future tail pulling. Another parent may say this behavior warrants a slap on the hand. Different parents parent in different ways. What to do when the opposing parents reside in the same home? This is where communication is key.

Before baby gets to Fido’s tail, bring up the subject. Try role-playing the scenario. Find our where your partner’s disciplinary measures have their roots. Most likely, you will parent as your own parents did. As partners, you can help each other analyze the success of your parents’ methods. Did you stop hitting your sister when your mom spanked your bottom? If not, why repeat the cycle with your own son? If your wife’s parents used the Time Out method with success, why not try it for a while? No matter the decision, it’s one that needs to be made before the hand hits the tail.

Don’t limit the discussion to one behavior or one age. Consider the possibilities as baby turns one, then two, three and so on. What will you do when she hits or throw tantrums? How will you handle her refusal to eat and her defiant act of holding her breath in protest? What about the six year old who comes home from school using words best left to stand-up comics? Will his mouth be washed out with soap? Will you be truthful and explain the inappropriate meanings of the language?

Sure, it may seem pointless to plan the details of Junior’s revoked privileges when he takes the car out at age 14, but talking out possibilities will kick start an open line of communication between parents that will be easier to continue than start down the line. In addition, partners will be able to identify patterns in their spouse’s disciplinary tactics. If your husband’s reaction to most offenses involves quiet time, hugs and ‘I’m sorry’, and your punishments are more severe, involving loss of playtime or grounding, then you can consider yourself forewarned for the future. In such cases, finding common ground on the discipline field will take more work and compromise and possibly some trial and error with the kids.

So, when baby throws sand in the sandbox, you’ll be happy you and your spouse discussed discipline. Now, when she’s 15 and asks to go on a date? I’m sorry to say there is nothing parents can do to be prepared.

The Engineering Plotter

The Engineering Plotter

With a computer and particularly with CAD programs, it is possible to make engineering drawings and plans of virtually any size. You can zoom in to see the tiny details and zoom out to see the big picture both literally and figuratively. Most of the actual physical work in building a new prototype, however, doesn’t happen in front of a computer screen. The people who need the information contained in that drawing in order to turn it into reality, need something a little more portable. Today, as in days past, that means an actual paper drawing.

Today, those drawings are created with the computer and then printed out on a special oversized printer called a plotter. The plotter recreates the entire drawing on extra large plotter paper using a scale that makes it easy for the fabricators or technicians to see all the fine detail of the engineering drawing. The plotter can reproduce any kind of engineering drawing required to turn the concept into reality.

These usually include an exploded view drawing showing all the various components of the device as they will be put together in the finished device, an assembly drawing showing the components assembled together in the final form, materials lists, component drawings showing each piece of the device by itself, finish schedules that detail the surface treatments of the assembly, packaging drawings, and even marketing artwork for the carton manufacturer. Of course, there may be many more as well, including schematic drawings if the thing being drawn has electrical circuits.

These drawings are often printed out on the plotter paper and then packaged up as complete sets for those who need to see the whole picture, such as checkers, safety engineers, and others whose responsibility includes every aspect of the product. Others may have more limited needs and will receive a subset of the entire engineering drawing package. Those with limited need for drawings might include the circuit board layout designer, the packaging engineer, printers, and graphic artists.

Because of the wide variety of people who use these drawings and the number of projects that may be in development at a particular company, the engineering plotter is often in high demand as the only device capable of reproducing the fine detail of a complex new design in a size that allows it to be seen clearly without the use of a magnifying glass. Often these drawings are needed for a very specific time either for a group meeting or to coincide with the availability of a particular fabrication machine. It may take a considerable amount of time to print a single drawing due to the complexity and size of each image. Plotter time is often scheduled in advance to be sure that drawings can be completed to meet the time requirement.

Since the engineering plotter is often remotely located to those who send their drawing files to be printed, it is incumbent upon each user to make sure there is plotter paper left in the machine for the next printing job.
