Squaring the Blade When Putting
In addressing the putt, you should be square to the line you have chosen. Now, the important thing here is that the feet do not necessarily have to be square to that line, because there is no body turning in putting that affects swing path and ball direction. But the club face must definitely be square.
There are times when I find myself taking a slightly open stance with my feet, the left foot pulled back from the target line. Other times, I will get into a slightly closed stance, the right foot pulled back. I can’t explain why this happens, except that it feels better one way or the other at various times. It has virtually no effect on my putting other than that I feel better-an important effect.
You will often hear the pros say that all golfers must learn to play one way so as to build consistency into their games. That is basically correct, but again, we sometimes make small modifications as it strikes us, and we shouldn’t be afraid to do so.
To keep the blade of the putter square to the line of putt you don’t need any particular feel. It is a simple piece of construction. If you want to make sure it is square, put it down behind the ball, hold the club there with one hand and step behind the blade and check it out in relation to your line. You may have noticed that a lot of tour pros stationed their caddies directly behind them as they putted. Part of this was because they used the caddie to block out gallery movement and other distractions behind them. But the caddie also checked to see that the player’s putter blade was square to his line. He told him when it wasn’t. This is no longer legal.
