Every year my friends and I have a huge New Year party. With all the hype about the 2012 New Year end of the world, we decided that we should plan something really huge for that year’s party. None of us actually believe in it but what better reason to do something you have always wanted to do than impending doom? We all have talked about how amazing it would be to take a trip to New Zealand for as long as we have known each other and since they are the first place to ring in the New Year, we decided to join them in their festivities, or rather take our festivities there. You see while we are not a rowdy bunch we do sometimes get a little loud and because of that we usually try to find a private area to have our parties.

I contacted a couple of travel agents to see what kind of deals we could get and quite frankly, the hotels were much more expensive than I had expected. Worse yet there would not be a whole lot of privacy. We would be forced to join in the local celebrations. I did not care for this idea at all so I decided to look around a bit more. I am very glad I decided to take matters into my own hands. After a few days of looking through travel guides and searching online I found one of the best kept secrets ever. I found a website that specializes in the rental of private villas!

This site is amazing. The staff is super friendly and they had no problem pairing us up with our ideal location. They went so far as to help us arrange transportation and even found someone to grocery shop for us in advance so that the only shopping we will have to do is recreational. We can arrange for nearly any service we want. Granted these amenities add a bit to our cost but it is still cheaper than staying in a hotel and eating out every meal!

We are really looking forward to our New Year’s adventure. I am sure it will be fantastic. The amazing landscape and warm weather could only be matched by the warm spirit of our companions. The booking company has assured us our stay will be flawless. They even had a large selection so that we could choose exactly where we want to be. There really is something for everyone, water front or on a mountain top. You can choose from private pools, a Jacuzzi, a full lodge or a private love nest! What better way to celebrate or just relax than your own?

So if you are planning a get away, look into renting a private villa. It is worth the extra time. You will find nicer accommodations and have more options than just a typical hotel. Let this vacation be your ideal vacation and live your dream. You don’t even have to wait for impending doom to do it!

Pennsylvania was the second state to ratify the Constitution. The state has a long and rich history of support for independence and religious toleration.

Before European settlers moved to the area, Native Americans lived there. Among the tribes were the Delaware and the Susquehannock (whom Englishman John Smith visited in 1608).

From the early 1600s, the Pennsylvania territory was disputed territory. People from Holland, Sweden, and England all claimed titles to land in what we now call Pennsylvania. The Swedes were the first European power to make a permanent settlement in present-day Pennsylvania. In 1643 Governor Johan Printz of New Sweden established his capital at Tinicum Island within the present limits of Pennsylvania. The Dutch had trading posts in the area, and fighting broke out between Holland and Sweden eventually. England was also , and England won in 1664, capturing New York and Pennsylvania both.

It wasn’t until 1681 that Pennsylvania got its name. England’s King Charles II gave William Penn, a Quaker, the right to settle there, and named the area Pennsylvania in honor of William Penn’s father, Admiral Sir William Penn. (Yes, William Penn is the son of Sir William Penn.)

Penn was a member of the Society of Friends, or Quakers. Many people in England didn’t like the Quakers and wanted them to leave (much like the Pilgrims had to leave a few years earlier). He brought many Quakers with him to the new territory of Pennsylvania, and they lived in religious freedom there.

Penn began buying land from the Native Americans who lived to the west, and the current borders began to take shape. Settlers from Germany and France also came to Pennsylvania. In fact, France claimed the western part of what is today the state of Pennsylvania. Many Dutch and Swedes still lived there, too. And despite the Quakers’ opposition to slavery, African-American slaves were brought into Pennsylvania to work for non-Quakers.

With French claims in the west and English claims in the east, it was probably inevitable that the two cultures would clash. They took up arms against each other in the French and Indian War. The western territory saw most of the fighting. Pittsburgh, especially, was a hotbed of activity. Pittsburgh today was Fort Duquesne back then, and English General Edward Braddock lost his life in an attack on the fort. (A young George Washington accompanied Braddock on this expedition.) The French also had forts at what is today Erie, Franklin, and Waterford.

The concept of recycling is not a new one. It was first introduced with the advent of the plastic bottle. Recycling has been a mainstay of subsistence societies for thousands of years and was an aspect of the thrift necessary to survive in an unpredictable world ruled by scarcities. The term “we use everything about the pig except the squeal” was a factual statement. Nothing was wasted; everything had a use.

Three events in history changed this viewpoint and opened the door to a throwaway society ruled by a “waste it” mentality. One was the introduction of mass production techniques by industrialists such as Henry Ford which helped remove scarcity from the equation, and made it possible for large numbers of people to own commodities manufactured in volume. Those same concepts applied to agriculture resulted in larger, more certain agricultural yields. The second was what could be called “The Chemical Revolution”, which has it’s origins in the early 19^th century, the industrial application of which was made on a broad scale in the mid-20^th century. Thus began the Age of Synthetics. Practical applications in the chemistry of substances gave us chemical fertilizers, nylon and polyester, revolutionized medicine and eventually led to the ubiquitous plastic bottle. The third event involved the employment of mass communication systems, newspapers, the beguiling radio and finally television. Entertainment fueled by advertising revenues ushered in the Marketing Age and Consumerism as a social philosophy was born. “Planned obsolescence” materialized as a means of maintaining the momentum of Consumerism.

The net result of these three events has been a wholesale re-configuration of raw materials into other things at a resource-busting rate. Simply stated this is the cycle of a waste-motivated society such as ours. The product, of course, is “waste”, which can be defined as substances or materials that no longer have a use.

It is not necessary to throw out the technological advances of the last century and a half to restore the true economy of this planet. In fact those same technologies which created the problem of waste are quite capable of resolving that same problem. The missing link is organization.

Every end product of our Throwaway Society can be recycled or put to further use. Soils, wood, ceramics, metals, plant debris and bio-wastes have been recycled throughout human history and, in fact, make up the vast majority of recyclable materials on this planet.

Paper, glass, textiles and plastics make up a more problematic category as they have undergone non-biological reconfiguration from their original form, but again are not beyond current knowledge and technological means to recycle for further use in our society. Recycled glass and paper are the best known applications of this sort of economy.

The most neglected and problematic to the aesthetics and health of our planet are the recovery of chemicals and of re-useable goods. The damage done by bad husbandry of the chemical by-products of industry is well-documented throughout recent history. Responsible chemical recovery policies at the industrial level and adequate recycling options at the consumer level answer the problem.

The environmental clutter and sheer mass of wholesale discard of re-useable goods such as household goods, clothing, intact demolition debris, building materials, computer equipment, lighting fixtures and other manufactured items begs the re-evaluation of wasteful manufacturing strategies such as planned obsolescence.

Strong resale markets that are themselves the product of depressed economic conditions extend the lifetime of existing commodities thus keeping them out of the waste stream. The degree of workability of this depends utterly on a change in the value given thrifty economic practices such as personal stewardship of one’s belongings.

The idea that the economy of the world depends utterly on the consumption of manufactured goods is the fundamental idea that precludes wholesale endorsement of recycling technologies as a viable economic activity. This fixed idea has done more than any other factor to make the problem of reusing and recycling the end products of our industrial world “unsolvable”. Making recycling economically viable may result in entirely new technological applications which will extend the lifetime of this civilization. It would be a terrible thing to have to throw this civilization away because it could not conceive of the usefulness of its own end products.
